The Chipmunks Dance Meme: Why Every Trio Gets Cast

Nov 1, 2026

The Chipmunks Dance meme is simple: any three people do the same routine on TikTok, and the comments cast them as Alvin, Simon and Theodore. Nothing official sits behind it, and no cartoon characters appear in it. Posts carry #alvinandchipmunks because a trio is a trio.

What makes it a meme and not only a dance is what happens underneath each video. The likes below are as of November 1, 2026.

Same dance, different trio

The routine barely changes from post to post. What changes is who is doing it and where.

Three friends in maroon, blue and green dancing on a sidewalk at night
@jamestanner9, a night sidewalk
Three dancers on a green tennis court under a pink sunset sky
@bopieandjo, a tennis court
Three dancers in round ears and matching colors in a bright room
@wenersisters, round ears
  • Siblings. @athenaa_c danced it with two siblings on a deck under the caption "Dancing runs in the fam". It passed 18 million plays, the most of any post we found.
  • Friends in three colors. @jamestanner9 and two friends did it on a sidewalk at night in maroon, blue and green, and passed 7.6 million plays.
  • A tennis court. @bopieandjo tagged theirs #sisters and #chipmunksdance, and passed 5.5 million plays.
  • Round ears. @wenersisters wore matching colors and ears, tagged #chipettes, and passed 4.6 million plays.
  • Halloween. @kimberlykimpena's trio posted under #halloween and #triocostume, and passed 5.4 million plays.

The running jokes

Everyone gets a character. On @jamestanner9's post, the top comment is "wait the chipettes have competition", with more than 222,000 likes. Right behind it are "Alvin came to fix his reputation for this one" and "Theodore's energy is EVERYTHING". Three friends in three colors became the chipmunks without saying so.

Theodore steals it. The dancer cast as Theodore gets the most love. "I have a feeling this was Theodore's idea" has nearly 20,000 likes, and "Theodore's rent was DUE" has more than 11,000. One commenter suggested renaming the group: "it's Theodore and the Chipmunks now".

The film references. @jamestanner9's caption reads "Uncle Ian is putting us back to work", a nod to Ian, the record producer in the films. Under it, "My dad is literally uncle Ian" has more than 16,000 likes, and "we demand a squeakquel" has nearly 3,000.

The costume debate. Plenty of people dress the part, and the comments keep score. "Finally yall are actually dressed like them. I'm tired of the corsets" has more than 112,000 likes under @wenersisters' post. Under @kimberlykimpena's, "Finally someone who only puts the letter on Alvin" has more than 45,000.

Energy is the score. Viewers grade how hard each person commits. "The literal appropriate amount of energy" and "Burgundy has been waiting to do this one" are real comments on the tennis court version. Under @wenersisters' post, one comment says that every low-energy version sends them back to rewatch this one.

Why the casting is the joke

Three people dancing is not new. Here the audience joins in, deciding which dancer is which chipmunk. That has three effects:

  • Any trio works. Siblings, roommates and friends all fit, because the casting does the rest.
  • A costume is easy. Three colors are enough to make the joke land, which suits a Halloween group.
  • Comments pile up. Everyone has an opinion on who is who, and that keeps the posts moving.

It also explains why so many versions can coexist. You are not copying the first post. You are offering a new cast.

Make your own version

You do not need two friends who will rehearse. On the Chipmunks Dance page you add a photo each or one group photo, and the three of you take the places in the routine, in the clothes from your photos. To see how the places differ, read the template, turn by turn. For where it all started, read about the Chipmunks Dance trend.
