The Chipmunks Dance Trend: The Song, the Moves and How It Spread

Nov 1, 2026

The Chipmunks Dance trend is a three-person TikTok routine that took off in October 2026. Three people stand in a row, jump, swap places and take turns at the front, to a fast, high-pitched club edit of You Spin Me Round. It is also called the Alvin and the Chipmunks dance, because the comments cast every trio as Alvin, Simon and Theodore.

What song is it?

The song is You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), the 1984 single by Dead or Alive, in a sped-up club edit. That is why so many posts carry #youspinmeround and #youspinmerightround alongside #chipmunksdance.

The high voices sound like the chipmunks, and the link goes back further than TikTok. The Chipmunks recorded their own version of the song. It plays over the credits of the 2009 film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, and it is on the Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked dance game.

Searching the title on TikTok will not always find the sound. It is listed as an original sound under the names of the people who uploaded it, such as spotifyremixes_ and keiford98. The quick way is to open one of the posts and tap the sound.

How the moves go

Every group has its own small variations, but the order holds.

Three dancers in a row on a tennis court at the start of the routine
The row
Three dancers mid-jump as they swap places
The jump
A new dancer up front with the others behind
A new one up front
The dancers trading the front spot near the camera
Turns at the camera
  1. The row. Three in a line, the one in the middle a step ahead, everyone staring at the camera.
  2. The jump. Arms go up, everyone jumps on the beat, and the row lands in new places.
  3. A new one up front. Someone else takes the middle with their legs wide and dances big.
  4. Side on. All three turn side on and move together in a line, arms pointing up.
  5. At the camera. One dancer runs right up to the camera while the others dance behind, and they keep trading the front spot from there.

If you want to film it for real, many of the big posts use a low camera, tilted up, so all three fit head to toe with the sky above them.

How it spread

Dates and plays come from the TikTok posts, as of November 1, 2026. We could not trace who started it, so this is what we can see, not where it began.

  • October 16: @wenersisters post it in round ears and matching colors, tagged #chipettes and #costumeideas. It passes 4.6 million plays.
  • October 18: @athenaa_c and two siblings dance it on a deck under "Dancing runs in the fam". It passes 18 million plays, the most of any we found.
  • October 23: @jamestanner9 and two friends do it on a sidewalk at night in maroon, blue and green. It passes 7.6 million plays.
  • October 27: @bopieandjo post it from a tennis court, tagged #sisters and #chipmunksdance. It passes 5.5 million plays.
  • October 30: @kimberlykimpena's trio posts it as a group costume under #halloween and #triocostume, and passes 5.4 million plays. A how-to for making it from a photo passes a million plays the same day.

Google searches for "chipmunks dance" climbed that same week, with "alvin and the chipmunks dance" close behind.

Why it caught on

Three things in the comments stand out.

  • It needs exactly three people. Siblings and friends can see themselves in it straight away. "Me and my friends need to do this" turns up under the tutorials.
  • The casting is built in. Viewers argue over who is who, as the Chipmunks Dance meme guide shows.
  • A costume is easy. The timing landed right before Halloween, and three colors are enough for a group costume.

Is it official?

No. Nothing connects the TikTok trend to the people behind Alvin and the Chipmunks, or to the song's artist or label, and this site has no connection to any of them either. It is just people doing the same dance.

How to join in

You can learn it from the posts and film it with two friends. If that is not going to happen, make a Chipmunks Dance AI video from photos instead: three photos or one group photo, and the moves come from the clip.
